THE STORY OF THE WEEK

Universal Music Group has sued DistroKid, the world's biggest music distributor, accusing it of flooding platforms with AI generated tracks while claiming to distribute genuine artist made music. Days later, Universal and Sony filed a second lawsuit against Suno over its newest model, arguing it was built on the outputs of an earlier, already disputed model rather than trained fresh as claimed. Together the two cases mark a shift from majors only chasing AI platforms to also holding the distribution pipeline itself to account.

THE HEADLINES

Resident Advisor's weekly roundup flags Fuse Brussels resident Altinbas's forthcoming single on Ostgut Ton, alongside new releases from B0YG1RL and Introspekt.

BMG has deepened its partnership with electronic music pioneer Jean-Michel Jarre, now licensing his entire recorded catalogue and future works.

Disco house project Black Meteoric Star released a new album, Wet, to some of the strongest reviews of any dance record out this month.

ARTIST TO WATCH

One name worth knowing from Mixmag's 2026 watchlist is Dyslecta, a UK techno producer building a reputation on detailed sound design and rhythmic control rather than noise for its own sake. It is the kind of record that rewards a proper system over a phone speaker, and exactly the sort of artist worth catching early, before the sound outgrows the rooms currently booking them.

LABEL SPOTLIGHT

Ostgut Ton, the label attached to Berlin's Berghain, keeps doing what it has always done well: signing the people who actually play the room and letting the records follow the DJing. Fuse Brussels resident Altinbas is the latest example, with a new single due via the label on 25 September. It is a reminder that a venue's own community can become a genuine roster if a label is patient enough to let it happen.

Help Musicians x DJ Mag's Electronic Music Award: up to £3,000 plus mentorship for UK electronic artists, deadline 25 September.

Youth Music's NextGen Fund: up to £3,000 for music projects supporting under-25s, deadline 25 September.

PRS Foundation's Open Fund for Music Creators: up to £5,000 for creators of any genre or career stage, check the current deadline on their site.

The Music Export Growth Scheme: up to 50% match funding for labels taking an artist's campaign abroad, open on a rolling basis through March 2027.

ON THE CHARTS

HUGEL, Imael Angel and Ultra Naté's Movin' to the Sun holds the top spot on this week's Official UK Dance Singles Chart for a third straight week, while Mau P's Just A Little Bit More continues to lead the Beatport chart. Cloonee and Prospa's Good Girl is one to watch, climbing from 9 to 5 on the Official Chart this week, a sign it is picking up real momentum beyond the clubs that broke it.
